Glen Howard Obituary

Glen “Bud” Howard, 94, former Welfare Director of Delaware County, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Marion VA Hospital.

 

Glen was born December 11, 1923 in Muncie, Indiana to the late Lewis and Cleo Howard. Glen graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1943. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Business from Indiana University in 1954. Glen was a pilot earning rank of Major in the United States Air Force. Glen’s B17 bomber was shot down on his 33rd flight mission during WWII. The German Army captured him as a prisoner of war and was held until the war ended. He also flew missions during the Cold War and the Korean War. While in the Air Force he also worked as a professor of Air Sciences at Miami of Ohio University in Oxford, OH. After retiring from the Air Force in 1956 he worked as a sales manager for Bacon American Corp. for several years before becoming the Welfare Director of Delaware County. Glen was a member of the Elks Lodge 245 and enjoyed golfing.

 

Glen is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Jeanne Howard; two sons, Tom Howard (wife Frieda) and Dr. John Howard (wife Stacie); five grandchildren, Carin Starcevic (husband Nick), Kelli Morrison (husband Garry), Paige Howard, Nathan Clary (wife Julie), and Andy Clary (wife Cathy); 5 great-grandchildren, Simon, Fletcher, Ward, Zach, and Wesley; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Glen was preceded in death by a son, Richard Howard; six brothers, Harold, Ray Junior, Leon, Carl, Robert, and Jack Howard; and three sisters, Shirley Gant and twin sisters, Lavella Barkman and Louise Barnes.

 

A funeral service to celebrate Glen’s life, along with military honors, will be held at 6:00 P.M. Thursday, February 8, 2008, at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel, 2215 S. Broadway St. in Yorktown, Indiana.  

 

Friends and family will gather to share and remember two hour prior to services from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Thursday, at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel.

 

Entombment will be in Elm Ridge Memorial Park Mausoleum. Those services will be private.

 

The family would like to thank the caring staff at the Marion VA Hospital.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to A.R.F. (Animal Rescue Fund) 1209 W. Riggin Rd., Muncie, IN 47303.
