Nelson D. Vance

Nelson D. Vance, 87, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Bethel Pointe Health Campus in Muncie, Indiana.

Nelson was born on April 27, 1930 in Henry County, Indiana to the late Marion and Martha Vance. He grew up in Springport and graduated from Mt. Summit School in 1948. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955, flying missions in the Korean War. Nelson married Mary Jo (Stokes) Vance on February 8, 1959 and lived in Gaston until moving to Pendleton in 1990. They were married 49 years before her passing in 2008. Nelson worked for Guide Lamp in Anderson for over 30 years. After his retirement he worked at Brockway Golf Course in Lapel and Hoosier Park Horse Track.

Nelson is survived by four children, Kevin Vance of Gaston, Julie Huston (husband Brantt) of Muncie, Nelson Vance of Pendleton, and Jay Vance (wife Krista) of Gaston; six grandchildren, Amber Vance of Gaston, Britney Mettert (husband Nic) of Sarasota, FL, Chelsey Lancaster of Gaston, Justin Vance (wife Lauren) of Wentzville, MO, Sarah Roush (husband Luke) of Roll, and Joshua Vance; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Nelson was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian; and two brothers, Hugh and Jerome.

Nelson’s family would like to thank the loving and caring staff at Bethel Pointe, especially the rehab hall.

A funeral service to celebrate Nelson’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Gant Funeral Homes, Gaston Chapel, 109 W. Elm St. in Gaston, Indiana. Pastor Michael Osborne will officiate. Burial will follow in Thompson Cemetery.

Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at Gant Funeral Homes, Gaston Chapel.
