Shelby D. (Smith) Couch

Shelby D. Couch fell into the arms of her savior on January 24, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Shelby was born June 13, 1937 in Burkesville, Kentucky to the late Reed and Jewell (Myers) Smith. She graduated from Gaston High School in 1954. Shelby has lived in Burkesville, Linden, New Castle, Gaston, Gas City, Point Isabel, Converse, Swayzee, and Anderson. She married Max Couch on May 28, 1955. In 1958 she moved to Converse where they adopted their daughter Ramona. In 1962 they moved to Swayzee and in 1965 adopted their second child, Roger. Then in 1968 Greg was born into their growing family.

Shelby was a member of the Herbst united Methodist Church. She was involved in many various activities at the church through the years from vacation bible school, Women’s groups, and many chicken suppers. While her children were in school she was a room mother for many classroom activities. As a homemaker she loved to cook and do laundry. Up until the last few weeks, she was still making cookies for her friends at dialysis.

Shelby is survived by her loving husband and caregiver, Max Couch; three adoring children, Ramona Ogle (husband Steve) of Camden, Roger Couch (wife Denise) of Converse, and Greg Couch of Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Darla Couch of Anderson; four grandchildren, Mark Ogle of Delphi, Mary Davis (husband Jay) of Flora, Christy Couch (fiancé Andrew Wills) of Muncie, and Ben Couch of Anderson; and two great-grandsons, Gage and Gabriel Davis of Flora; her devoted brother, Voyne Smith (wife Elaine) of Gaston; and several nieces and nephews.

Shelby was preceded in death by her parents and grandchild, Megan Ogle.

A funeral service to celebrate Shelby’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Gant Funeral Homes, Gaston Chapel, 109 W. Elm St. in Gaston, Indiana. Pastor Jeremy Moore will officiate. Burial will follow in Matthews Cemetery.

Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at Gant Funeral Homes, Gaston Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Herbst United Methodist Church, 2561 S. 600 W., Marion, IN 46953.
