Donald W. Sayre, 90, of Gaston, passed away early Sunday morning, July 1, 2018 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
Donnie was born February 11, 1928 in Gaston, Indiana to the late Edwin and Litia (Zell) Sayre. He graduated from Gaston High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Army during WWII as a medic. Donnie retired from Indiana Steel and Wire and went on to work for Johnny Morris Chevrolet and Gant Funeral Homes, Gaston Chapel. He was a member of the Prairie Grove Church, member and past master of the Matthews Masonic Lodge, member and past president of the Gaston Lions Club, and member and past president of the Wes-Del School Board.
Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Patty Sayre; two daughters, Sheila Ruhnow (husband Rich) and Kristy Sayre; a sister-in-law Sue Sayre; three grandchildren, Troy Rose, Matt Ruhnow (wife Michelle), and Andrew Ruhnow; three great-grandchildren, T.J. Sholes, Caden Ruhnow, and Connor Ruhnow; and several nieces and nephews.
Donnie was preceded in death by two brothers, Jay and Edwin Sayre.
A funeral service to celebrate Donnie’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 6, 2018 at Gant Funeral Homes, Gaston Chapel, 109 W. Elm St., Gaston, IN 47342. Pastor Joe Blaylock will officiate. Burial will follow in Thompson Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.
Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Gant Funeral Homes, Gaston Chapel with Masonic Rites to take place at 7:30 P.M.
