David L Porter

June 4, 1943 ~ June 3, 2016 (age 72) 72 Years Old

Sgt. David L. Porter, 73, of Yorktown, passed away Friday, June 3, 2016 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

 

David was born May 2, 1943 in Anderson, Indiana to the late Jacob and Bea Porter. He graduated from Yorktown High School in 1961 and went on to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. David was sent to Vietnam with; Army Specialist 4th Class Ray Gribble, Warrant Officer Harvey Howe Jr., LCpl Dave Reasoner, SP4 Phillip Reed, Elmer Rhoads, LCpl Steven Shekell, PFC Alan Shroyer, and CW2 Gary Englehardt. David was the only one to come back alive.

 

 David worked in Maintenance at Marsh Supermarkets for 42 years before his retirement in 2002. David enjoyed working in his yard taking care of his flowers and garden. Most of all, David, enjoyed helping others.

 

David is survived by his son Brian Porter (wife Angi) of Indianapolis; special friend, Nicki Brown of Chesterfield; three siblings, Lavada Ruddick of Yorktown, George Porter of Greenbrier, TN, and Dorothy Quate (husband Merril) of Yorktown; his adopted children, Michael and Jennifer Shultz; his adopted grandchildren, Kelsey and Nathan Shultz; several nieces and nephews, the Miller family, and his Yorktown Speedway family.

 

David was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, George Ruddick and Dave Hudson; sister-in-law, Sigrid Porter; and three nephews, Randy and Tim Hudson, and Jon Stewart.

 

A funeral service to celebrate David’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel, 2215 S. Broadway St. in Yorktown. Burial will follow with military honors conducted by the Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

 

Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Monday and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel.
