Iona Garrett Obituary

Iona Ava Garrett, 83, of Muncie, Indiana passed away on July 26, 2025. She was born on June 18, 1942 in Muncie to Henry C. Masters Sr. and Evelyn L. Masters.

Iona (Oni) lived her life showing love to her family and friends and was a joy to know. She was witty, smart, and fun to be around.

Iona is survived by her daughter Sonia Folkner (Larry Folkner), daughter-in-law Michelle Cline (David Cline),  brothers Henry Masters Jr.(Shirley), Maurice Masters, sister Carol Bell (Roger), grandchildren; Clinton Garrett (Cori), Christopher Garrett, Cherie Forrest (Jake Forrest). Travis Garrett, Clayton Folkner, Lukas Folkner, step grandsons; Jason Folkner (Tori), Paul Folkner, and Shane Folkner, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Iona was preceded in death by both parents, husband Benjamin T Garrett Sr, sons Kevin M Garrett and Benjamin T Garrett Jr., sister Sharon Studebaker.

Oni attended Yorktown High School and later received her diploma from Clonlara Private School.  She attended various churches over the years. She took on various jobs short term over the years to supplement her family’s income, but most years spent as a Mother, homemaker and helper to her musician husband, spending weekends traveling locally with the band, and being a seamstress for the band making musical equipment covers and banners. She was mechanically minded, able to rebuild carburetors and helped to completely rebuild a dilapidated house including doing wiring, drywall, painting, flooring, etc., to raise her family where she spent 50 yrs of her life. She was an accomplished seamstress, crafter, and in her recent years spent her summers raising many Monarch Butterflies and educating others to benefit the endangered species.

Midlife Iona lost her beloved husband and 2 sons within just a few years of each other and was able to overcome that terrible grief and proclaimed often that God brought her through it. She was an anchor to others around her in their stresses. She was strong, resilient, and humble. She is remembered by many as “the nicest person I ever met.”

A celebration for Oni’s life will take place on Friday, August 1st, 2025 at Gant Funeral Homes Yorktown Chapel, 2215 N. Broadway St. Yorktown, IN 47396, at 1:00 pm with Pastor Flint Redwine officiating.
