Jacqueline Cunningham

September 29, 1927 ~ October 30, 2016 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Jacqueline Cunningham of Yorktown, died peacefully, loved ones at her side, on October 30, 2016 at Yorktown Manor. Born September 29, 1927 in Anderson, she was the only, much loved child of Lilly Irene (Ruth) “Lilly Belle” and Glen “Red” Carmany; an eccentric and entertaining family. After graduating from high school in 1945, she received a degree in Nursing at Ball State University in 1947. After six months in Los Angeles with her classmate Jo Denton, the homesick women returned to Muncie and began working at Ball Hospital. When her car’s motor started to catch fire, she drove into a gas station owned by Lowell Cunningham, and they were married two years later. They remained married for the next 55 years until his death in 2006. In 1953, she gave birth to her only child, David. In 1958, the family moved to Yorktown and lived there until her death.

She worked for Dr. M.J. Moss, Dr. Cooley, and a nursing home until retiring Fun loving, she enjoyed fishing, sports, power walking with friends, playing cards “Black Jack,” gardening, music, traveling with friends, charity work, and the Yorktown Church of the Nazarene. Growing up during the Great Depression, she loved beautiful clothes, jewelry, and being dressed up, and made-up for church and going out to dinner – things not affordable when she was a child. “Looking like a movie star” as one friend used to say.

My mother was greatly loved by so many people, and she loved them all so dearly in return. There are many people to thank. Please forgive me if I have left anyone out. Ball Hospital, and the nurses who cared for her recently, thank you. To all the staff, nurses, and aides at Yorktown Manor for the love and care she received there; thank you Jermaine. To all the women friends who stuck by, through the good and the bad; thank you Wanda Pickering, Ernestine Taylor, and Jan Blankenbaker. I can never begin to thank enough three people who treated her like their own mother: Suzanne Gettinger and Barbara and Larry Stevens. You three have been the best friends anyone could have hoped for. Thank you, with all my heart. My mother was so much more than anyone could write in these brief words. She will always be loved and greatly missed.

“And we’ll never be afraid

of who we are

and what we’re not

come what may”

There will be no public funeral services.

The Gant and Miller families are honored to celebrate Jacqueline’s life with her family and community.
