James C. Masters III, 73, went home to be with the Lord following a courageous battle with lung and bone cancer on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at his home in Muncie, Indiana.
James was born May 17, 1942 in Yorktown, IN to James II and Ruth Masters. He attended Yorktown High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 in the 2nd Armored Division out of Ft. Hood, TX. He also served 20 years as a drill sergeant in the Army Reserves with the 70th training division out of Muncie, IN, and served honorably in the Gulf War in 1991. James worked for General Motors for over 42 years as a forklift operator, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. James enjoyed fishing, boating, softball, basketball, and bowling. He also enjoyed coaching softball and spending time with his grandchildren.
James is survived by his loving wife, Bettie Masters; four children, James C. Masters IV of Muncie, Jeffrey Masters (wife Jill) of Cowan, Melissa Masters of Muncie, and Gregory Masters (wife Heather) of Muncie; a step-daughter, Christina Clark of Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren, Josh Masters, Justin Masters, Lacie Burge, Adam McCaffrey, Alex Gannom, Sara Masters, Peyton Masters, Grace Masters, Taylor Wright, Cayla Torres, Candace Torres, Andrew Torres, and Caitlin Torres; a great-granddaughter, Blakely Burge; three siblings, Michael Masters, Vickie Vorhees, and Monte Masters (wife Marcelene); two half sisters, Kelli Doughty (husband Jack) and Toni Conners (husband Gary); a step-brother, Ronnie Sizemore; a special friend, Kevin Shafer; and several nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his father, James Masters II; his mother, Ruth Masters; his step-sister, Sherry Charleton; and his best buddy, his dog, Wyatt.
A memorial service to celebrate James’ life will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel, 2215 S. Broadway St. Yorktown, Indiana. Inurnment will follow in Yorktown Cemetery.
Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Saturday at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Blakely Burge College Fund with checks in care of Lacie Burge.
