Larry Applegate, age 82, of Yorktown, Indiana, passed away at home on Monday, February 24, 2025. He was born on May 25, 1942, in Muncie, Indiana to Thomas and Sarah Belle (Thompson) Applegate. Larry lived in Yorktown his entire life and graduated from Yorktown High School in 1960. He married Patty Beouy in September of 1961. Larry and Patty began dating when they were 15 and 14 respectively, and they celebrated over 62 years of marriage together prior to Patty’s passing this past July. They shared two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Larry was deeply involved in the Yorktown Community. He was on the Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department starting at the age of 20, and spent many years serving the Yorktown community in this capacity. This was a family tradition. His father, Thomas Applegate; his great-uncle, Buford “Midge” Barlow; his uncles, Charles Applegate and George Ware; and his twin brother, Garry Applegate all proudly wore the badge. He was also a precinct committeeman and was on the Yorktown Town Board for 16 years.
He and Patty enjoyed many years of traveling and camping with their children, and well into retirement. They loved serving as campground hosts at Mounds State Park, and wintering in Florida where they made memories with friends. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and was always so proud of all their accomplishments. Larry worked for Marsh Supermarkets for 43 years. He started at Marsh when he was in high school and was there until retiring in 2002.
He will be missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Doug Shott; his son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Amy Applegate; grandchildren, Drew Shott, Aaron Shott (wife Victoria), Aubreigh Applegate (husband Jacob Foster), Brandt Applegate, and Addi Belle Applegate; great grandchildren, Jolie Foster and Ayda Foster. He was preceded in death by his wife Patty Applegate, and parents Thomas and Sarah Belle Applegate.
Services will be held on Monday, March 3rd at Gant Funeral Homes – Yorktown Chapel, 2215 South Broadway Street, Yorktown, IN. Calling hours will be from 11:00 to 1:00, with the service immediately following at 1:00. Burial will follow at Yorktown Cemetery.
