Opal Nadine Garland, 96, of Anderson, passed away on Thursday morning, August 5, 2021, at Middletown Nursing and Rehabilitation. Opal was born on August 7, 1924, in Anderson, Indiana to the late Bethel and Nettie (Whetsel) Garretson. She attended Anderson High School. Opal was a homemaker and had also worked as a cook at Compton’s Post Restaurant. Opal enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Opal is survived by two sons, Stephen Best (wife Terri) of Yorktown and John Best (wife Judy) of Anderson; four grandchildren, John Best (wife Helen) of Atlanta, GA, Todd Best (wife Holli) of Tallahassee, FL, Stephenie Mellinger of Chesterfield, and Steve Best (wife Toavona) of Yorktown; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Kay Hedges (husband Harry) of Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Garland; a granddaughter, Sandi Best; and three siblings, Robert Garretson, Lester Garretson; and Dorothy Dashler.
A funeral service to celebrate Opal’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, August 9, 2021, at Anderson Memorial Park Chapel, 6805 Dr. M.L.K. Blvd. in Anderson. Burial will follow.
Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm at Anderson Memorial Park Chapel.
