Rita Kay (Scales) Sayre

Rita Kay Sayre, 80, of Gaston, passed away on Monday morning, March 28, 2022, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

Rita was born on October 26, 1941, in Muncie, to the late Bernard and Ruby (Brothers) Scales. She was a 1960 graduate of Harrison Township High School. Rita was a homemaker and also worked in the Muncie City Clerk’s Office. Rita enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and ceramics. She was an avid IU fan and enjoyed watching tennis. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren.

Rita is survived by a daughter, Karen Collins (husband Brent); three grandchildren, Duell Hatfield, Reese Collins, and Trace Collins; two sisters, Billie Joan Burkett and Marilyn Scales; a brother, William Scales (wife June); her best friends since high school, Gloria Ryan, Jane Ellen Niccum, and Carolyn Duckworth; and several nieces and nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Sayre; daughter, Vicky Sayre; grandson, Kerry Hatfield; and sister, Carolyn Hiser.

A funeral service to celebrate Rita’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Gant Funeral Homes – Yorktown Chapel, 2215 S. Broadway St. in Yorktown. Pastor Rodney Eiler will officiate. Burial will follow in Jones Cemetery.

Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, on Thursday at Gant Funeral Homes – Yorktown Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice in memory of Rita.
