Virginia B. (Whitman) Mercer

YORKTOWN - Virginia (Ginny) Blanche Whitman Mercer, 92, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Indiana University Health – Ball Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Ginny was born on June 23, 1923 in Petersburg, Indiana, the daughter of Thelda Mae Loveless Kemper and John Whitman.  She graduated from Princeton High School and Ball Memorial School of Practical Nursing.  Ginny proudly served in the United States Navy as part of The Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service Program (WAVES) during World War II.  She married Robert (Bob) Mercer in Bloomington, Indiana on August 2, 1947.  They shared sixty-seven wonderful years together before his death on April 1, 2015.  Ginny worked as a nurse for Ross L. Egger, M.D. for over twenty years before her retirement.  She was an active member of the Yorktown United Methodist Church, Yorktown United Methodist Women, Yorktown Lioness, and the Yorktown Women’s Club.  Ginny especially loved being a member of the church choir and singing on Sunday mornings.
Ginny was an extremely active member of the Yorktown community.  She served over twenty years on the Yorktown Town Council, appointed to the Executive Committee and Site Selection Committee for the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.  Ginny was on the board of the Wright Memorial Library and a founding member of the Yorktown Public Library.  She then went on to serve as a library board member for many years.
Ginny is survived by her three children, Mike Mercer, Bev LaVelle (husband, Pat), and Cindy Johnson (husband Mike); seven grandchildren, Randy Mercer, Shane Mercer (wife Rhonda), Shannon Mercer (wife Gaylynn), Jenifer LaVelle-Moore (husband Jason), Brooke Crowder (husband Justin), Ginny Peden (husband Joey), and Blake Johnson (wife Natalie); six great grandchildren, Betsy and Matthew Mercer, Isabel, Ella, and Grace Moore, and Molly Crowder; as well as special family member Jody Mercer, and  five sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, and two brothers.
A funeral service to celebrate Ginny’s life will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 11:00 am at Yorktown United Methodist Church. Pastor Bob Kiefert will officiate.  Burial will follow at Yorktown Cemetery.
Friends and family may gather to share special memories on Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm as well as one hour before the funeral service at the Yorktown United Methodist Church.

Ginny Mercer will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, amazing mother, loving grandmother, and extraordinary great grandmother.  She was so proud of the family that she and her husband had created.  Her legacy of love will continue to live on in all of them.
